Preview: WWE NXT (8/22/23) – Heatwave Takes Center Stage

WWE NXT puts on a special episode of their weekly show with NXT Heatwave taking place on August 22. This will be the second time that the Heatwave event will be hosted by WWE NXT, following the 2022 edition which took place in mid-August. In the 2023 year, Heatwave will mark the fifth special episode that NXT will offer, following the two-week Gold Rush specials in late June.  NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes will defend his title against Wes Lee in the main event of Heatwave. Tiffany Stratton, the NXT Women’s Champion, has been announced for an appearance but no match as of this writing. NXT North American Champion Dominik Mysterio and WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley will also face Dragon Lee and Lyra Valkyria on tonight’s show.

 

Six matches are set for tonight’s developmental brand episode. One is for the championship, the other for NXT’s Heritage Cup, and another in a Mixed Tag Team match.

Main roster stars have visited the developmental brand before, but two that have made their stay prominent are Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio. The latter has endlessly insulted the roster since winning the North American Championship, while The Eradicator protects him. Tonight, two stars that stood up against The Judgment Day duo are Dragon Lee and Lyra Valkyria.
